“In the 1950s, one of the most popular scenes for painters was Dan Byrd’s bait shop and burger shack at the southern abutment of the New Pass Bridge. To me, it was the perfect Sarasota scene with the beautiful colors of the waterfront, the charm of the bait shop with its moored boats, and the texture in the architecture of the bridge. These are all of the elements an artist loves to paint!”

“The bait shop is gone now, and there is a new span across the Pass. However, I recently explored around the current bridge, and noticed that someone cared enough about history to preserve a large section of the original abutment that I painted in 1952.”
